It’s awards season in the whiskey business and the first whiskey to be produced in Derry in almost 100 years, “The Quiet Man”, has continued its run of success picking up 4 Silver Medals in the International Wine & Spirit Competition and two Gold Medals, one each for its 12 Year Old Single Malt and its Superior Blend at the Spirits Business Irish Whiskey Masters Awards.
Ciaran Mulgrew, Managing Director of Niche Drinks, the owners of The Quiet Man said that, “We are delighted to have won more Gold Medals for two of our whiskies in the Spirits Business Irish Whiskey Masters Competition – it is a fantastic endorsement for The Quiet Man. We have been building up our distributor network and attending as many whiskey shows as possible to spread the word about The Quiet Man and to win more Gold Medals after our similar success in the International Wine & Spirit Competition and the San Francisco Spirits Competition is a great help.”
Construction work on The Quiet Man Craft Distillery and Visitor Centre is well under way in Ebrington Square in Derry and Ciaran says that the company are aiming to be open for visitors by the end of next summer. “We are aiming to tell the story of The Quiet Man which was named after my father who was a barman for over 50 years and who always said that to work behind the bar you needed to be part priest, part psychiatrist and part social worker. You would hear all sorts of things but the key to being a good bartender is to tell no tales and that is why they called him “The Quiet Man”. We also want to bring to life the history of Derry as a whiskey producing city – there is a great story to tell there and we want to let people know about it”.
